‘Born This Way,’ Lady Gaga
Sounding like Donna Summer meets Pat Benatar by way of Meat Loaf, Gaga’s latest seems tailor-made for nostalgia. Forget the kids, 40-somethings will love it. A-
‘Alpocalypse,’ ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic
Al doesn’t break new ground, but parodies of Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are a hoot, and he’s good as ever at satirizing modern quirks from ringtones to TMZ. Plus, polkas! B+
‘Rave On Buddy Holly,’ Various Artists
Paul McCartney’s “It’s So Easy” is a train wreck, but there’s not another off note in this stellar tribute. Florence + The Machine, She & Him and My Morning Jacket provide standout tracks. A
‘All At Once,’ The Airborne Toxic Event
The band loses some of its manic energy on its second release, but “It Doesn’t Mean a Thing” rocks, and the whole enterprise boasts a nice punky melancholy. B
‘Retrorocket,’ The Paul Speidel Band
Boston outfit’s guitar-based blues originals pack a punch, but also swing on jazzy numbers like “Swing & Stomp,” while the lilting “Mary, Please Come Home” shows a sensitive side. B+
