WAYNE COUNTY — Tom Bouman will be the speaker at a luncheon on Wednesday, April 6th, 12 noon, at the Hotel Wayne in Honesdale, PA.
His presentation will blend a talk on rural American crime fiction, excerpts from new work that reflect that theme, and his personal history with a few old-time tunes on guitar or mandolin.
He will also sign books that will be available for sale.
Tom Bouman is the author of the acclaimed Dry Bones in the Valley, a debut rural noir mystery, which won both the 2015 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller and the 2015 Edgar Award for Best First Novel.
Bouman, a former editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Hachette Group, recently moved from New York City with his family to his childhood home on a dirt road in Susquehanna County, the inspiration for the natural and social setting of his novel.
The mystery’s lead character is Henry Farrell, thoughtful, melancholic, tough and haunted by his past.
He is an understaffed police officer in northeastern Pennsylvania in a fictional Wild Thyme Township in Holebrook County.
Henry is struggling to solve two murders: one ancient and the other contemporary.
Yet both relate to a rural community with its interconnecting familial roots, present day prejudices, and the tensions among hardscrabble poverty, drug crime, the ramshackle beauty of the environment and the financial comfort afforded by hydrofracking and the leasing of gas wells.
As Henry tries to balance the claims of justice and mercy, Bouman draws us into a world alive with complex and developed characters.
Tom Bouman has two more Henry Farrell novels under contract, and he is writing the second book in this series.
He’s currently a student at the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA. He plays guitar and mandolin. His wife is a graphic designer, and he describes his three-year- old daughter as both a princess and a pirate captain.
Tickets for the April 6th luncheon buffet are $20.00 and must be purchased in advance by the end of Saturday, April 2nd at the Wayne County Public Library, 1406 N. Main St., Honesdale, PA or by credit card at 570-253-1220. The Hotel Wayne is located at 1202 N. Main Street.
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Wayne County Public Library with all proceeds going to benefit the Library.
