WAYMART - An "enraged" borough man fired a gunshot in the direction of his stepdaughter as the two argued at a residence at 9 Canaan Road, state police said.

Kevin Martin Keating, 59, was arrested Wednesday night on several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Police said the victim, Molly Kate Allen, 26, of Waymart, fled the residence and was not injured.

Keating was arraigned before District Judge Ronald Edwards and placed in the Wayne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail. The suspect admitted to firing a round from a 9 mm handgun while Allen was in the house, police said.

According to paperwork filed by state police Trooper John Chervanka from the Honesdale barracks:

A neighbor, Rodney Loomis, said he had dropped off Allen at her stepfather's residence and shortly afterward hear the two arguing.

Loomis told police, "I heard (Keating) call her a b---- and shortly after that I heard a gunshot from inside the trailer. Molly ran outside and I got her out of there."

Allen told officers that Keating began to verbally abuse her after she had told him she could not find her diamond earrings.

Keating also began to "bicker with Allen over her finding a new place to live soon and began to continually talk to himself," court papers state.

Allen told police she went to her room to retrieve her belongings when she noticed her stepfather with the 9 mm handgun. The suspect pointed the firearm at Allen and discharged a round.

Allen told police, "I saw him point the gun at me and I started for the door, then I saw muzzle flash. (I) turned my head and heard the gunshot."

State police responded and took Keating into custody without incident.

A loaded 9 mm handgun was recovered from the residence, in addition to a spent round.
