It behooves me to make clear at the outset here that not all of us liberals, perhaps not even most of us, are inclined to defend NBC News anchor Brian Williams in the matter of his apparently bogus claims regarding his experiences in covering the Iraq War back in early oughties.

Frankly, I think NBC should fire Williams.

But it also occurs to me that this controversy inevitably gives rise to widespread examination of autobiographical claims made by other prominent newsfolk. Who among the other TV talking heads also has exaggerated his wartime experiences?

Well, it seems that Bill O’Reilly, the big star at Fox News, has done so. Not long ago, he said this:

I tell you what, I’ve been in combat. I’ve seen it. I’ve been close to it. And if my unit is in danger and I got a captured guy and the guy knows where the enemy is and I’m looking him in the eye, the guy better tell me. That’s all I’m gonna tell you. If it’s life or death, he’s going first.

Ah, but O’Reilly has had no more military service than I have (which is to say, no such service at all).
