Former Honesdale High School star Sean Curran is now starring for Alfred University
HOUGHTON, NY — Former Honesdale High School standout Sean Curran is continuing his collegiate hoops career at Alfred University.
Curran just recently tipped-off his senior season at the college, which is located in western New York state. The Saxons are a Division III squad that competes in the Empire 8, which is affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
Under the direction of 4th year head coach Dale Wellman, Alfred is looking to build upon a solid 2011-'12 campaign. The Saxons went 15-11 overall and 6-8 in league play, totals that propeled them to their first playoff appearance since the 2001-'02 season.
"We want to go out and battle, work hard every day and get better," Coach Wellman said.
"We had success last year because of great man-to-man defense. We want to hang our hat on that again this year. It's important that we go out and play tough defense and out-rebound the other team."
Alfred lost four key players to graduation last year, but appears to have a solid nucleus.
Curran is the Saxons' top returnee. Sean played in 25 games last season, earning three starts and doing the majority of his damage off the bench.
A superb "sixth man," Curran averaged just over 10 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He also chipped in with 23 assists and 22 steals.
"We need Sean to do what he's done for us the last three years, and that's shoot the ball and score," Coach Wellman said.
Curran boasts a solid all-round game, but excels as an outside scoring threat. In fact, Sean led the Saxons in treys with 56 and buried his bombs from behind the arc at a rate of 37 percent.
Thus far in the season, Curran is picking up right where he left off last year.
Through three games, Sean in Alfred's top scorer at 12.5 ppg. He has tallied 50 points, 27 of which have come from downtown.
He's also hauled down 15 rebounds and handed out five assists in just under 30 minutes per contest.
Alfred is off to something of a slow start in exhibition action this winter.
The Saxons tipped-off their season on November 16 with a 75-69 loss to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. They bounced back quickly, though, posting an 80-44 rout of Penn State/Greater A the very next day.
Last Tuesday, Coach Wellman's lads dropped a 61-53 decision to Penn College, then sustained a 77-66 setback against Hilbert College.
Curran began his senior season with a team-best 19 point outburst on Opening Night. Sean followed that up with six points in the win over PSU.
He then rattled the rims for 17 versus Penn College and netted eight in the loss to Hilbert.
Next up for Alfred is a Saturday afternoon home game with Cazenovia.
Opening tip is slated for 1 p.m. at the McLane Center.
Sean is the son of Mike & Jane Curran, Honesdale. He is a senior majoring in biology.
