Fourth of July weekend is coming up quick, which means fireworks are not too far behind. The Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce will host the fireworks display over Lake Wallenpaupack on Monday, July 4, with a rain date of July 9.

While the show is usually known to be spectacular, it takes a lot more work than just lighting up fireworks and watching them explode in the air. Any fireworks display, big or small, requires funding to move them along. That’s just what the Chamber is trying to do: raise funds to put on the fireworks display.

Debbie Gillette, Executive Director of the Chamber, explained that donations are down from last year.
“Last year it cost $24,000 to put on the fireworks,” she states. “The fees go up every year, but it generally costs the same for the show each year.”

Donations raised cover everything from the actual fireworks, to insurance and security, and everything in-between. There is no deadline for donations, and money raised after the current year’s display will go toward the next year’s. Gillette explains that the Chamber is still at least $4,000 short of the amount it takes to put on the fireworks display.

“This is an event that’s been enjoyed by generation after generation since 1975,” Gillette says. She added that watching the fireworks display is free, but people don’t realize how much it actually costs to put the show on to begin with.

The need for donations is great, and are greatly appreciated by the Chamber. The community is urged to show support, as the Wallenpaupack Fireworks are made possible entirely through donations and sponsorships. Checks can be made payable to the Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, and can be sent to 2512 Route 6, Suite 2, Hawley PA 18428.

The display is fired near the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack, next to the Wallenpaupack Area High School. It will begin around 9:15 p.m. Parking is available in the High School parking lot and the bleachers will be open to spectators at approximately 7 p.m. The fireworks can be viewed by the dike and by boat from the lake as well.

With record-setting crowds expected, attendees should plan ahead and arrive early. This year, Bold Gold Media’s Classic Hits 105.3 will be in the High School parking lot and will broadcast patriotic music before, during, and after the entire event.

Also on Monday July 4, there will be a parade at 2 p.m. in Hawley. It is hosted by the Hawley Borough.
