The Girdland United Methodist Church in Girdland is closing.

A pillar in the community, the 117-year-old church is holding its final service on Sunday, at 11 a.m.

It’s a sad day for church member Phyllis Newport. Baptized in the church, the now 77-year-old says she’s been attending there since infancy.
“A country church has special meaning for me. Just going there every Sunday with my family,” she said.

“My great grandfather Jonathan Bryant was one of the founders. My grandfather Otis Bryant was very active in the Sunday School and Church,” she said.

However, with only three church members remaining, Newport said the church just couldn’t survive.

The District Superintendent Beth Jones will be there for there for the service on Sunday, along with Pastor Donald Olsommer.

“We’re having a table that has a display of pictures from way back of the ministers and the church’s history,” Newport said.
