Damascus Christian Academy's boys varsity basketball team turned in a solid all-round performance this weekend against Goshen. The Defenders cruised to a 76-61 victory, thanks in large part to the hot-shooting trio of Cole Fredo, Cody Fredo & Caleb Jones.

For the second time this season, Damascus Christian Academy and Goshen put on an entertaining show for local hoops fans.

The Defenders and Knights first met back on January 12th in Goshen. That one was a wild, emotional rollercoaster of a contest which ended in a heartbreaking 89-88 loss for Damascus.

On Friday night, Coach Lane Jones’ squad made an emphatic statement in the re-match. The Defenders outscored the Knights in every period en route to a dominating 76-61 victory.

With this win, Damascus sewed up a berth in the 2010 KCEA Tournament. Weather permitting, the local lads will carry a #4 seed into first round action.

It appears as though the Defenders will open their Class AA title quest against Lebanon Tuesday evening at Canaan.

Off & Running
Friday night’s game at Damascus featured two teams with strikingly similar styles.

Both the Defenders and Knights like to play pressure defense and run the floor at every opportunity.

Goshen’s offense is built around Sal Murrone, a deadeye perimeter marksman who riddled Damascus for 24 points the first time around.

On this particular night, Murrone was just as deadly. He tallied at least six points in every quarter and finished up with a game-high 28.

Luckily for the hometown crowd, DCA countered with its Big Three: Cole Fredo, Caleb Jones and Cody Fredo. This hoops triumvirate combined for an eye-popping 64 points against Goshen.

Cole led the way with a team-best 23 points. Caleb was extremely effective from behind the arc, nailing three treys on his way to a 22-point outburst. Cody directed the Defenders’ fastbreak, scoring 19 points and handing out six assists.

Damascus led by three after one period, then took a 31-27 lead with them into the lockerroom at halftime.

After the break, things got interesting as Goshen stormed back to take the lead midway through the third quarter.

Brian O’Riordan drilled a pair of treys, giving the Knights a 34-33 advantage and forcing Coach Jones to burn a timeout.

Damascus responded with a run of its own, spearheaded by Nehemiah Jones. The young guard dialed up the first of two 3-balls, each of which came at a crucial moment in the contest.

Thanks to Jones’ peri-meter prowess, the Defenders surged back into the lead and cruised to victory. Damascus outscored Goshen by a margin of 24-14 in the fourth quarter.

Nick Adams rounded out the Defenders’ scoring with four points.

DCA 76: Cody Fredo 9 1-1 19, Caleb Jones 9 1-2 22, 11 1-1 23, Nehemiah Jones 3 0-0 7, Nick Adams 2 0-0 4, Bates 0 0-0 0, Sheard 0 0-0 0, Jones 0 0-0 0.
