You voted. And voted. And voted. You voted so often that it was the highest online total ever for a Rockford Register Star sports poll.
And the result is a complete all-team Rockford IceHogs team.
Last Wednesday we announced our all-time team, as chosen by Mike Peck, the IceHogs’ director of broadcasting and media relations, and myself. But we stopped short of selecting the entire 18-man squad, allowing readers to vote for the backup goalie and final bench player. Over the next six days, a total of 12,407 votes were cast.
Without further ado, as they say, the winners were goalie Michel Robinson and forward Bruce Watson.
Even with that many votes, the final tabulations were close. In Watson’s case, his victory over runner-up Jason Ralph was by three-hundredths of a percentage point, 26.54 to 26.51. Ralph led the voting for most of the week.
The reaming vote-getters for the 18th spot (with their percentages) were: Bob Nardella (16.09), J.C. Ruid (7.62), Jason Notermann (6.07), Robin Big Snake (5.94), Jeremy Rebek (4.31), Jason Firth (3.19), Steve Dumonski (2.17) and J.F. DuFour (1.55).
Robinson’s final total was 52.21 percent compared to 47.79 for Rivard, who led the voting for long stretches.
The 16 other members for the team spanning eight years in the now defunct United Hockey League. Frederic Cloutier is the starting goalie, with Nathan Lutz, Jeff DaCosta, Derek Landmesser, Alex Alexeev, Matt Gens and Tim Wedderburn as the defensemen. The front line was filled with Preston Mizzi, Mike Figliomeni, Nick Checco, Brant Blackned, Chaz Johnson, Greg Barber, Dave Paradise, Olivier Proulx and Kevin Ulanski.
Steve Martinson, who led Rockford to the final Colonial Cup championship this past season, is the coach.
