They may not be the spring flowers that everyone wants to see after a long Northeastern Pennsylvanian winter but the election signs that have been dotting the North Pocono horizon over the past few weeks are another tell-tale sign that spring is here.
This year’s election season shows more familiar faces than newcomers to the local political scene, since this year’s candidates are mainly incumbents running for reelection. However, the North Pocono School Board of Directors and the Covington Twp. Board of Supervisors are the region’s main elections to watch.
In Covington Twp., two seats are available on the board of supervisors. Incumbents Bill Willson and Charles “Bucky” Lindner are running for reelection; however, Willson is the only candidate running on the Democratic ticket. Besides Lindner, Republican candidates include Scott Van Fleet and John Brostoski, Sr.
As for the North Pocono School Board of Directors, former board President Joseph Cummings is up for reelection in Region 1 (Elmhurst, Roaring Brook, and Jefferson Twps.). Current board Treasurer Gary Sowinski has opted not to run for reelection, as has board member Jean Pedley. Candidates running for these open positions in Region 1 are Paul Kowalski and Nicholas Butler.
In Region 2 (Thornhurst, Moscow, Spring Brook), board member William Sebring is not seeking reelection. Jerry Maglio is running for Sebring’s seat.
The North Pocono School Board election will be particularly telling as it will determine whether or not board votes will continue with a 5-4 majority/minority split.
Election Day is May 19 in Pennsylvania and polling places will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
