Western Wayne’s youth football program will officially begin its 2010 NAJFL regular season campaign this weekend.
The Junior Wildcats are scheduled for a Sunday afternoon road trip to North Scranton and a full slate of games against the Vikings.
Opening kick-off for the C-Team contest is scheduled for noontime.
“We’re really excited about our first game of the year,” C-Team Rookie Coach Jason Sauter told TWI Sports. “We have a good mix of new guys and veteran guys and they seem to mesh pretty well together.”
Second year B-Team skipper Bill Duda was quick to echo those sentiments.
“Our kids are already be-ginning to gel,” he said. “We graduated almost all of our players to the next level, so this might be a little bit of a re-building year. “But, I think the future is looking really bright.”
Western Wayne doesn’t have an A-Team this year, but the D-Team should be a source of excitement for the youngest players. Coaches Sauter and Tim Hess lead that squad.
Final Tune-Up
All three Junior Wildcat teams closed out their exhibition slate last weekend against Honesdale.
Western Wayne leaned heavily on its defensive unit in the C-Team encounter.
Coach Sauter singled out his linebacking corps for special praise in what became a 6-0 shutout of the Stingers.
“Danny Boots, TJ Hess, Kobe Sauter and Dylan Walck all played very well,” he said. “As a group, they’re very aggressive. They run to the ball and make a ton of tackles for us.”
Boots led the offensive attack for Western Wayne in this one. A tough-as-nails fullback, Boots is a threat to deliver a killer KO block or rip off a long run.
“He can do it all,” Coach Sauter said. “Danny runs very hard and is also an excellent lead blocker.”
Walck started the season at QB, but will be making the move to tailback. Dylan scored Western Wayne’s lone touchdown in the win over Honesdale. He broke loose on a bootleg, rolling 30 yards around right end for the TD.
“He’s very quick,” Coach Sauter said. “He gets the ball and just goes. I think Dylan is probably going to have a very good season for us.”
Kobe Sauter began the campaign at tailback, but is now settling into the role as C-Team signal-caller.
“He’s very mobile,” Coach Sauter said. “We’re going to try and throw the ball and run it, too. Kobe probably gives us the best shot at having a balanced offense.”
