Tim Russell of Honesdale appears to have Western Wayne’s Lucas Karnick in a serious predicament during this non-league showdown at the Varden Garden. However, Karnick rallied to take control at 160 pounds and eventually emerged with a 10-5 decision. The ‘Cats prevailed, 36-29.

Western Wayne closed out its dual meet season with a flourish this week, dealing archrival Honesdale a 36-29 loss in a non-league showdown.

With this win, the Wildcats improved their record to 16-6 on the season.
Both teams were back on the mat this weekend at the Lackawanna League Championships.

Western Wayne is the defending champion among the league’s Class AA teams. In addition, the ‘Cats are basking in the glow of a second trip to the PIAA State Duals tourney.

Coach Dante Terenzio’s lads are also making final preparations for the District Two meet, which is set for next weekend (Feb. 24-25) at Lake Lehman.

On the Mat
In a match that was remarkably even in every other aspect, Western Wayne put this one away via clutch performances in the upper weight divisions.

Joseph Ingaglio added another line to his sparkling resume with a fall at 220. The senior heavyweight dropped down a class on this particular night and registered a third period pin at the expense of Scott Donovan (5:31).

Matt Rosensweet jumped up to 285 and also delivered a fall. The junior clamped Shamus Benson 15 seconds into the second period.

Josh Brown added another pin for the Wildcats, putting Brett Jackson on his back in the second period at 113 pounds (3:20).

Manny Mirailh and Lucas Karnick also came through with key wins.

Mirailh hammered out an 11-1 major decision over Eric Daniels at 145. Karnick delivered in the clutch, rolling to a 10-5 decision against Tim Russell in the night’s final bout (160).

Honesdale received solid efforts from Ben Rutledge and Evan Kennedy.

Rutledge posted a lightning quick fall at 106 lbs., clamping Western Wayne’s Ronnie Mrsich in :38. Kennedy was even more impressive at 126, needing just 25 seconds to pin James Tinklepaugh.

Nic Duffy recorded the evening’s final fall, putting the proverbial clamps to Cory Franc in the first period at 120 (1:26).

Zach Smith opened the match with a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Garrett Enslin at 170. Moments later, Western Wayne’s Virgil Burns got those points back with a 9-1 major over the Hornets’ Rob Borkowski at 182.

Conner Rosensweet then made it back-to-back wins. The Wildcat senior dominated his bout at 195, eventually dealing Joe Quinn a 5-0 shutout.

Matt Evans and Aaron Kennedy swung the momentum back in Honesdale’s favor with consecutive wins at 138 and 145.

Evans, the Hornets’ most recent member of the 100-Win Club, cruised to a 16-0 technical fall at the expense of Derek Sosa.

Kennedy, who many local grappling pundits believe will make some serious noise this year at districts and regionals, pounded out a 9-2 decision over Morgan Fuller.

Beau Fuller set the stage for Karnick’s match clinching win with a 9-1 major over Chavez Lill.
