Western Wayne was sitting pretty after Day One this weekend at Lackawanna Trail’s Wrestling Tournament.

On Friday evening, the Wildcats appeared well on the way to defending the title they won for the first time last year.

Coach Dante Terenzio's lads ran roughshod over their opposition, posting an 18-1 record from weight classes 138 through 285.

"We were definitely sitting pretty," he told TWI Sports. "The competition was really good, but I think we had the inside track on winning it all again."

Sadly, Mother Nature intervened and Western Wayne never got the chance. Thanks to Saturday's snowstorm, the 'Cats weren't allowed to make the return trip. The tournament continued, but without its first place team.

"I'm so disappointed for the kids," said Coach Terenzio. "They worked really hard against some top notch competition to get where they were. We're wrestling better than we have all year right now. It's just a shame."

Western Wayne will be back on the mat this week for a pair of crucial Lackawanna League assignments. The 'Cats host Trail on Wednesday, then travel to Valley View for a rare Saturday afternoon match.

Dominance
The Wildcats struggled in the lower weight divisions, winning just one bout and suffering eight losses.

However, they more than made up for these ugly numbers by dominating at every other bracket.

Morgan Fuller got the ball rolling with two solid wins at 138 pounds. Manny Mirailh was equally impressive at 145, going 2-0 with a pin and an injury default.

Beau Fuller posted back-to-back falls at 152, while Lucas Karnick went 2-0 with one clamp at 160.

Garrett Enslin earned rave reviews from his mentor for a day's worth of terrific wrestling. A senior who competes at 170, Enslin opened his gold medal quest with a major decision, then added an epic 3-2 OT decision against Valley West's Trey Cowman.

"That was a huge win for Garrett," said Coach Terenzio. "He wrestled a great bout. That kid beat us earlier in year, so it was nice to get a little bit of payback."

The Rosensweet Brothers continued their on-mat dominance with four more outstanding performances at Trail.

Conner recorded a first period fall and a major decision at 195, but Matt was even better at 220.

The younger Rosensweet needed just :40 for his first round pin against Coughlin, then dazzled the big crowd with a :13 clamp over a Valley West opponent.

"I'm really kind of excited to see what Matt can do when districts and regionals roll around," Coach Terenzio said. "He's in an incredibly tough weight class. District Four is loaded at 220 and there's Eric Laytos to worry about in our own district. Still, I think Matt is going to make some serious noise."

Joseph Ingaglio closed out Day One with a stellar effort of his own. Western Wayne's senior heavyweight posted a first period pin of his own Spartan opponent (1:53), then went overtime in dealing Souderton's big man his first loss of the entire season.

The final score was 3-2.

"Nothing Joseph does surprises me anymore," said Coach Terenzio. "He just goes out there and wins one big bout after another."
