Damascus' junior high hoops program tipped off its week with an exciting game against Delaware Valley Dingman’s Ferry.
The Lady Demons took the court with a full house of fans cheering them on. The Warriors seemed to be the superior team as the game started off, but the Demons would not easily bow down.
The Warriors leapt out in front early and at the end of the first quarter the Demons trailed 6-2.
As the second quarter began the Warriors continued to show dominance when suddenly Damascus came to life.
Trailing 10-2, the Lady Demons rallied and by the end of the second quarter the score was 10-9.
Intermission seemed to pass quickly as the game had intensified to start the second half.
Defense seemed to be the key in the third quarter. Both teams seemed to just go back and forth and neither could really score any points.
At the end of the third the score was 12-10.
As the final quarter began the girls plotted a come back. With a basket and a free throw, the Demons took the lead for the first time in the game 13-12.
Sadly for local fans, this lead didn’t last long. The Warriors then scored with 2:07 left in the game to go ahead 14-13.
Then with 1:47 left in regulation seventh grader Olivia Meyer made a free throw to knot it up at 14.
“As a seventh grader Olivia has taken on a lot of responsibility this year, but she has enjoyed stepping into the leadership role through out the year,” said head coach Brad Meyers.
Regulation ended with a tie 14-14 and then overtime began. Unfortunately, the Demons seemed to run out of energy as OT rolled on.
DV went on to win the game 19-14. With this loss, Damascus’ record fell to 3-10 on the year.
This mark doesn’t truly reflect the Demons play this year. This is their second OT setback this year and three of those losses were only by three points.
“It’s frustrating to lose another close game this year, my girls battled were just always in a constant search for a little more offense then we are getting,” said Meyers.
Leading the way for the Demons was Olivia Meyer with eight points, five steals and three boards.
Alexis Pfeil also chipped in a majority of the offense with 5 points and 6 rebounds.
Katie Schlagenhaft banged the boards for 9 rebounds.
