Dime Bank continued its late season surge Monday night with an impressive win over FMS.
The Pythons used a combination of stellar defense, potent offense and a dominating performance from Jorge Gutierrez to hang a 8-0 shutout on the visiting Generals.
“I’m really happy with this win,” Coach George Kinsman told TWI Sports. “We seem to be peaking at just the right time. We’re playing fantastic defense and hitting the ball hard. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to have Jorge pitching as well as he is now.”
Gutierrez was outstanding on this particular day. He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and issuing only one free pass along the way.
With this win, Honesdale improves its District 15 record to 6-3 overall.
Next up for the Pythons is a Wednesday evening match-up with Elk Lake. That contest is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start. It will be played on whichever field is in better shape after this week’s record rainfall.
Gold Glove Defense
Thus far in the summer season, Honesdale has emerged as one of the top defensive teams in all of District 15.
Erik Sandercock and Jake Schilling have been patrolling the middle infield for three years now. They form key parts of a deadly double play combination...one that converted three twin killings against the Generals.
On Monday, though, it was the Python outfield that caused FMS nightmares.
Matt Dirlam, Andrew Branning and Alex Hicks brought the hometown crowd to its feet several times with stellar plays in support of Gutierrez.
“Boy, those kids can really fly out there,” said and appreciative Coach Kinsman. “I don’t know that there’s a better outfield in the league. They can cover alot of ground.”
Dirlam turned in the Play of the Day defensively. Matt dove headlong to spear a sinking line drive, hanging on to the ball even though he collided in mid-air with Hicks.
At the plate, Scotty Shaffer and Brad Fasshauer led the way for the victorious Pythons.
Shaffer enjoyed a 2-for-3 day at the dish. The Dime Bank’s clean-up man scored a pair of runs and collected four RBIs.
Fasshauer was just as impressive. Brad went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and one RBI. It was a performance that elicited high praise from Coach Kinsman.
“Brad has a nice swing,” he said. “He doesn’t try to do too much with a pitch. Brad loves to drive the ball to the opposite field. I think he does that as well as anybody around.”
Hicks, Schilling and Sandercock were devastating at the top of the Pythons’ batting order. This trio combined for six hits five runs scored and a pair of RBIs on the night.
