Late last month, a talented group of local martial artists traveled to the Electric City to compete in a high-octane tournament.
Under the direction of Thomas Wasylyk and Ruth Skorupa, students from the Masters Tang Soo Do Academy fared well at the 10th Annual Masters Cup Tournament.
The event was hosted by the University of Scranton and attracted more than 200 competitors from all over the region.
“I’m very proud of all our students,” Master Wasylyk told TWI Sports. “They are a very disciplined and very dedicated group.”
The local school, which is based in Honesdale, sent a total of 20 students to the tournament. They ranged in age from five to 50-years.
While several local students acquitted themselves well, one stood out. Melissa Young battled her way to gold medals in both fighting and forms.
“Melissa did an excellent job,” Master Wasylyk said. “She works very hard and it really shows.”
Next on the agenda for Master Wasylyk’s school is an appearance at the 30th annual tournament hosted by Master Scott.
Masters Tang Doo So Academy is part of the organization founded by Master Scott 30 years ago.
“That is a really big deal,” Master Wasylyk said of the event, which will be held in Aston (Delaware County). “The competition there will be wicked!”
Tournament organizers are expecting between 300 and 400 competitors.
Masters Tang Soo Do Academy (formerly known as Wasylyk Karate) is based right here in the Maple City at 931 Main Street.
Master Wasylyk’s classes are open to boys & girls, men & women of all ages and abilities.
Ruth Skorupa is Program Director of the Honesdale school. There are two other locations: Hawley and Newfoundland.
