Bob Simons added yet another line to his Hall of Fame links resume this weekend at the venerable HGC.
The winningest coach in the history of PIAA scholastic golf, Simons is still a formidable presence on the course himself.
On Sunday afternoon, he captured his third Honesdale Golf Club Senior title by outdueling Tom Howe.
Simons qualified for the Championship Flight by firing a 73 on Saturday. He followed that up with a 72 on Sunday, good for a 36-hole total of 145 and a three shot win over Howe.
Simons doubled the 11th hole, but then played the last seven in a total of 2-under par to lock up the title.
“I putted the ball better than I have in a long time,” Bob told TWI Sports. “Putting is all about confidence and concentration. I was able to focus really well this time around.”
Simons is now a 3-time HGC senior champion. He also copped the crown in 2001 and 2005.
Howe opened with a sizzling 69 on Saturday, but crashed back to reality with a 79 on Sunday. Tommy had been the 2-time defending champ.
Tom Corrigan ended up in 3rd place (155), while Irv Williams took 4th (157).
Other Winners
Ed “Cousy” Martin won the First Flight with a score of 78 over Sunday’s final 18 holes.
Pete Tonetti finished up four shots back in second place. He carded an 82.
Kim Johns led the way in Second Flight action. The veteran HGC linkster shot 76 to outduel Ralph Langendoerfer, who carded an 80 on Sunday.
Paul Guinther and Ron Wychowanec battled down to the wire in Third Flight competition. Just one stroke separated the two golfers heading into the back nine Sunday.
However, Guinther came home in 42, while Wychowanec struggled to a 47.
