Western Wayne’s varsity wrestling team put the finishing touches on a storybook season Monday evening.
A big, enthusiastic Varden Garden crowd cheered the Wildcats on as they crushed both Montrose and Susquehanna in a rare Lackawanna League tri-meet.
Coach Dante Terenzio’s lads opened the festivities with a 66-9 massacre of the Meteors. The ‘Cats then closed out the night by blasting the Sabers. The final score was 66-3.
With these two impressive wins, Western Wayne sealed the deal on a Division II title. The ‘Cats posted a perfect 8-0 record in copping their first league crown in three years.
“I’m so proud of these kids,” Coach Terenzio told TWI Sports. “They’ve worked very hard to get where they are now. They deserve to be the champs.”
Next up for Western Wayne is a trip to District Two Duals. Last year, the ‘Cats were the 9th ranked team in Class AA. This time around, they’re at the top of the heap.
“The difference between this season and last season is pretty amazing,” Coach Terenzio said. “These kids did everything I asked them to do and it’s really paid off.”
Domination
Western Wayne wasted no time taking control of Monday’s tri-meet.
Zachary Clookey opened with a 13-3 major decision over Montrose’s Jay White at 112. From that point on, the Wildcats just dominated the match.
Beau Fuller ignited a 5-bout run by the home team that the Meteors simply couldn’t counter.
Fuller pounded out a 14-0 major at 140, pushing Western Wayne’s lead to 26-6.
Big brother Casey followed with yet another huge win. Fuller is still undefeated on the season and made Montrose’s Mark Wagner his 22nd victim.
Casey cruised to a 12-0 lead in this one before finally putting the clamps on. Fuller pinned Wagner as the first period buzzer sounded, giving the ‘Cats an insurmountable 32-6 cushion.
Garrett Enslin (152), Josh Harrison (160) and Kadiem Wheatle (171) followed with three more dominating wins.
Enslin opened up a 5-0 lead after one period against Blake Van Nostrand. Garrett turned on the jets from there, cruising to a 15-2 major.
Harrison appeared to be in a dogfight at 160. The Wildcat junior battled to a 6-6 tie against Zach Thorne before taking control.
Josh put Thorne on his back in the last minute of the bout, then finally posted the pin with 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
Wheatle pleasantly surprised his coach by showing a spark of aggression at 171. Kadiem pounced on Mike Gardner less than a minute into the bout and nearly came away with a pin.
Wheatle upped his lead to 9-1 after two, then closed things out in the third. The inevitable fall came with 1: 11 left in the bout.
Over & Out
The Rosensweet Brothers teamed up with Evan Decker to complete the rout.
Connor earned his first-ever varsity win with an electrifying pin at 215.
The Wildcat frosh overpowered Montrose’s Chris Mordevancy in the opening two periods, then made his move late in the bout.
Connor posted the pin with just one tick remaining on the clock.
Matt had a bit of trouble with Brian Castrogiovanni early on, but ratcheted up the pressure en route to a fall.
Rosensweet tallied a first period takedown, then took control in the second period. The pin came at 2:33 and set the stage for Decker’s grand finale.
Evan needed just 54 seconds to put away Heather Decker at 103.
“I’m very happy with how things went today,” Coach Terenzio said. “We went out there and took care of business. We stayed focused and didn’t make any mental mistakes.”
