Western Wayne finished up its most successful varsity football season in many years this past weekend.
The Wildcats traveled to the Electric City Saturday afternoon for an LFC Division Two battle with Scranton Prep. The local lads put up a gallant struggle, but came out on the short end of a 28-14 final score.
With this disappointing loss, Western Wayne closed out the 2009 campaign with an overall record of 4-6. The ‘Cats went 2-4 in divisional action.
Prep punched its ticket to the Eastern Conference tournament with the win. The Cavs are the #4 seed in Class AAA and will travel to Northwest Area Friday night for a showdown with the top-rated Rangers.
Opening kick-off for this contest is set for 7:00 p.m.
LFC Finale
Western Wayne and Scranton Prep played to a scoreless tie in the opening period. However, the Cavs used their precision aerial assault in soaring to a second quarter lead.
Quarterback George Pachucy directed the attack. The junior gunslinger fired a pair of touchdown passes before halftime.
Pachucy broke the scoring ice by hitting Karlon Quiller with a 39-yard strike. That same duo hooked up again with 4:15 left in the period, giving Prep a comfortable cushion.
Both Cavalier players turned in memorable performances in this one. Pachucy would finish up his evening with six completions, good for 130 yards and a pair of TDs. Quiller, who is still just a freshman, snagged four passes for 93 yards.
The Wildcats refused to fold, however, and got on the board late in the half.
Wildcat signal caller Joey Siclari broke loose for a 13-yard TD scramble just 26 seconds be-fore intermission.
Siclari, Josh Harrison and Joe Vonderhey were at the heart of Western Wayne’s gameplan.
Siclari wound up going 14-for-22 through the air. Joey’s completions covered 141 yards and accounted for one TD. He was also intercepted twice.
Harrison earned his money on this particular evening. The Wildcats’ junior tailback ham-mered his way to 55 yards on 21 carries. Josh closed out his ‘09 campaign with 1,107 yards and 13 TDs.
Vonderhey accounted for the final Western Wayne TD versus Prep. The senior scatback drew his ‘Cats to within seven points with a 10-yard TD catch late in the third quarter. This score capped an epic 14-play, 96-yard drive that ate up nearly 12 minutes on the clock.
The Siclari-to-Vonderhey combination clicked six times, good for 70 yards. Joe ended his senior season with 25 receptions, 357 yards and six TDs.
