Scranton, Pa. -

Canaan Christian Academy’s varsity basketball squads remained undefeated with a weekend sweep of St. Rose Academy.

On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Hoops City in Scranton and returned to Varden with a pair of convincing wins.

Coach Kristi Magi’s girls used a 15-0 second quarter run to help secure a 40-12 decision over the host Phoenix. With this convincing victory, the Lady Eagles improved their overall record to 6-0.

“We really didn’t know what to expect after such a long Christmas lay-off,” CCA Athletic Director John Ashley told TWI Sports. “We thought the girls might be a little rusty, but they stepped up and played a really good game.”

In the nightcap, Canaan’s boys team employed a 1-2-2 full court press and dominated St. Rose all throughout the first half. The result of that early momentum was an impressive 53-21 win.
Coach John Ashley’s boys are now 6-0 on the season.

“The boys put together a great team defensive effort,” he said. “We had some questions going into this game, but they answered in pretty convincing fashion.”

Next on the agenda for CCA is a long road trip on Friday to Apalachin (NY). All four Canaan teams will be in action for this one, beginning with the JV girls at 4:00 p.m.

Turning Up the Heat
Sarah Schweinsburg, Eliza VanDeLinde and Courtney Swingle led the Lady Eagles to victory in Saturday’s opener.

Schweinsburg got things going with an early 15-footer. Sarah added another middle range jumper to give the visitors an 8-4 lead after one. She then drained a long-distance trey before the break en route to a team-best nine points.

The Lady Eagles sealed the deal on this one with non-stop hustle in the middle two periods. Canaan outscored St. Rose by a staggering margin of 26-2 in the second and third.

VanDeLinde tallied eight points and added five steals. Swingle owned the paint, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds and muscling her way to five points.

Alisha Howell, Kay Black and Ashlea Swingle each chipped in with four points, while Becky Misiura added two.

Back in Action
Matt Thompson and Josiah Misiura paced the Eagles to a lopsided win over the Phoenix.

A junior who runs the show as Canaan’s primary ballhandler, Thompson erupted for a game-high 17 points. He thrived in fastbreak situations, but also hammered home a deep trey.
Misiura tallied nine of his 11 points in the first half.

Also contributing to the CCA cause offensively were: Raul Salavarria (six pts), Nathan Kilian (six pts), Nick Chupick (four pts), Ricky Grant (three pts), Ryan Hollingshead (two pts), Philip VanDeLinde (two pts) and Brendan Lupyak (two pts).

“It was encouraging to see our guys clicking so well,” said Coach Ashley. “Best of all, the kids seem to be having fun together and enjoying the game.”
