Canaan Christian Academy’s girls basketball team opens its regular season slate this weekend with a road trip to Hazleton.
The Lady Eagles tipped-off the 2009-‘10 campaign against Immanuel Christian on Friday...a prelude to what should be an exciting and emotional winter.
“I’m looking forward to an enjoyable season,” Head Coach Kristi Magi told TWI Sports. “This team has talent and heart. Many of our players are young, but they’re also very versatile.”
Coach Magi enters her 14th and final season at the helm of CCA’s girls varsity squad. At the end of the school year, she is heading for China to do missionary work.
Stay tuned to TWI Sports for complete coverage of the Lady Eagles quest for another crown.
A Fresh Start
Canaan is coming off a season of unprecedented success.
The Lady Eagles reeled off 17 straight wins en route to an NPCA tourney title and a second place finish at the statewide KCEA Class AAA event.
Coach Magi’s girls finished 18-1 overall, their lone loss coming to Huntingdon, 35-29, in the championship game.
Sarah Schweinsburg, who is lost to graduation, led the way at the KCEA tournament. She scored a game-high 16 points in the semis, then earned an All-Star selection with a solid performance in the final.
Courtney & Ashley Swingle also received All-Tournament recognition...and both of those girls return to the fold.
This year’s edition of the varsity squad boasts an interesting mix of talented youngsters and battle-tested veterans.
Amanda Chupick, Courtney Swingle and Alisha Howell will lead the way. All three are seniors and each is set to play a key role for CCA.
Chupick will run the offense from her point guard position. Amanda missed all of last year with a devastating knee injury.
“I’m very glad to have Amanda back,” said Coach Magi. “She is a natural athlete and and excellent ballhandler.”
Swingle’s strength lies in a focused, blue-collar work ethic and in her versatility. She can score from the perimeter or battle her way to points in the paint.
Howell and junior Kay Black should see the majority of their minutes in the low post.
“Our upperclassmen girls are wonderful,” said Coach Magi. “They have already started to take the younger and more inexperienced players under their wings.”
Sophomore Becky Misiura is expected to make key contributions in the backcourt. Freshman Ashlea Swingle will also make her presence felt once again.

Sparkling Resume
Over the course of the past 15 years, Canaan has compiled an unrivaled record at the annual NPCA tournament.
This event is held each year utilizing gyms at North Pocono, Canaan, Western Wayne and Trails End Camp.
With Coach Magi at the controls, CCA has captured a record six titles. The Lady Eagles also own five sportsmanship awards and have placed 14 players on the All-Tournament Team.
Stephanie Thompson is right at the top of that list. A 2008 graduate of Canaan, Thompson earned a pair of MVP trophies (2006, ‘07) and received all-star nods five times.
Betsy Lamberton twice copped MVP honors (1995, ‘96) and was a three time all-star.
Leah Rosa was honored as a co-MVP in 1998, while Court-ney Swingle is Canaan’s latest Most Valuable Player (‘09).
