Western Wayne put the finishing touches on a brilliant Lackawanna League soccer campaign Thursday evening at Mid Valley.

The Lady ‘Cats cruised to a 9-1 rout of the Spartans, sealing the deal on a school-best 13 win season. The victory also sets up a one game play-off with Valley View for the Division Two title.

“The girls are excited,” Coach John Fahrenbach told TWI Sports. “They’re pumped up.”

The final showdown between Western Wayne and Valley View will take place Tuesday night at Wallenpaupack Area.

This contest is the nightcap of a rare scholastic soccer twinbill. West Scranton and Pottsville will square off in the opener, the winner advancing to this year’s District Two tourney.

Game One also has ramifications for the local girls.

Should Western Wayne prevail, Coach Fahrenbach’s squad would earn the top seed in Class AAA and face the play-in victor. A defeat for the Lady ‘Cats would mean a lower seed and an opening round re-match with Scranton Prep.

Either way, Western Wayne will begin its quest for a District Two crown next Thursday. The Lady ‘Cats are headed for Scranton Memorial Stadium to play in the first round of this year’s D-2 tournament.

“They’re really a great group of kids...but, they still have no idea how could they could be,” Coach Fahrenbach said. “We definitely still have some room for improvement.”

League Finale
Charlcie Brink and Courtney Kromko led the offensive attack in Western Wayne’s lopsided win over Mid Valley.

Brink shook off the lingering effects of an ankle injury to tally three first half goals. The Lady ‘Cat midfielder broke the scoring seal just 2:20 into the match. “Chuck” made it 1-0 off a pass from Kristine Nilsen.

A little over eight minutes later, Kromko got into the act. Courtney hammered home an unassisted goal at the 10:54 mark, upping Western Wayne’s advantage to 2-0.

Brink dominated play over the course of the next six minutes. Chuck blasted in an unassisted goal at 15:30, then put the finishing touches on her hat trick thanks to a pass from Kacie Urian (21:00).

Brink closed closed out the ‘09 Lackawanna League campaign as Division II’s top scorer. Chuck also owns the all-time career mark at Western Wayne.

She erupted for five goals in a 10-0 massacre of Holy Cross and now has 82 for her 4-year varsity career. Chuck has been battling a sprained ankle the past couple of weeks, but Coach Fahrenbach feels she is almost back up to speed.

“Charlcie is a proto-typical midfielder,” he said. “She’s at about 90-95 percent right now. She’s moving much better and looking like her old self. She’s almost impossible to stop when she gets into open space.”

Urian, Sarah Wildenstein and Kromko rounded out the first half scoring outburst.

Kacie hammered home an unassisted goal at the 31:00 mark, while Sarah tallied off a Kromko assist six minutes later (37: 00). Courtney made it 7-0 at the break with her second goal of the night (38:55).

“We 10 starters back from last year’s team, but there are four in particular who really dominate on offense,” Coach Fahrenbach said. “Charlcie, Courtney, Sarah and Kristine...they all see the field so well. When they’re hitting on all cylinders, we are very tough to defend.”

Over & Out
Kromko earned her hat trick with an unassisted goal seven minutes into the second half.

Jenna Clauss rounded out Western Wayne’s scoring with an unassisted goal of her own in the 54th minute.

Mid Valley avoided the shutout thanks to a late tally by All-Star striker Erica Symons.

The Spartans’ junior found the back of Western Wayne’s net with just under 13 minutes left in regulation.

Phoebe Olsommer wasn’t exactly tested in this one. The veteran keeper made three saves as the Lady ‘Cats outshot the Spartans by a margin of 35-6.
