Western Wayne’s golf team is hoping to build upon the foundation of success laid down last year under the watchful eye of Coach Rich Weinberger.
With their affable Hall of Fame skipper at the helm, the Wildcats posted a record of 7-2-2 in Lackawanna League action.
The local linksters then advanced to the play-offs and hammered out a 7-2 victory over Valley View.
Sadly for ‘Cat fans, the run ended with a 9-0 loss to perennial D-2 powerhouse Abington Heights.
Onward & Upward
On a rainy Monday afternoon at Red Maples, the Wildcats picked up where they left off last fall.
Western Wayne opened up the 2010 campaign with a 51/2-31/2 win over longtime rival Honesdale.
Kevin Karabin paced the ‘Cat attack on this day. A battle-tested junior, Kara-bin earned medalist honors with a sizzling 35. He also teamed up with Bobby Dyer to capture an all-important better ball point (3&2).
Dyer turned in a stellar performance as well. Bobby shot 38 en route to a 3&2 decision over Honesdale’s Dillon Gavin.
Kevin Botjer and Cory Teeple added individual wins for the Wildcats, who excelled despite less-than-ideal conditions.
“Both teams played admirably,” Coach Weinberger told TWI Sports. “Anytime you can beat a team with the reputation Honesdale has...well, you just feel fortunate.”
The Hornets were led by the dynamic duo of Cody Dirlam and Mike Kussoff.
Dirlam fought his way to a 4&2 decision over Western Wayne’s Zach Call.
Kussoff battled right down to the final green before finally earning a 1-up win over Evan Decker.
Moving Forward
Western Wayne will be back in action later on in the week.
The Wildcats travel to Panorama on Friday for an encounter with Carbondale Area. That match begins at 4:00 p.m.
