Wargo Flooring is now just a game away from winning yet another Wayne County Men’s Softball League title.

Coach Russell Gregory’s ballclub leapt out to a big early lead in its Game One battle with Chet’s, then held off a fierce comeback bid en route to an 8-6 victory.

With this win, Wargo’s took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three championship set. If Mother Nature cooperates, Game Two of the series will be played this evening in Union Dale.

Should a third game become necessary, that contest would be held back at Hamlin Elementary next week.

Ken Rizzi Sr. turned in another stellar complete game effort Thursday.

The crafty veteran went seven innings in picking up the decision. “Senior” was opposed by another grizzled hurler, Billy Norton.

Chet’s ace simply didn’t have his best stuff on this particular night. Wargo’s pounded out all eight of its runs in the opening three frames and chased Norton from the hill.

He was relieved by Jason Castlebury, who went the rest of the way.

Brian Bolduc paced the offensive assault for Wargo Flooring. The veteran slugger blasted a 2-run homer down the leftfield line.

Jason Castlebury provided the fireworks for Chet’s.

One of the league’s hottest hitters this summer, Castlebury broke the scoring ice with a solo shot of his own off Senior in the top of the first inning.
