Last Friday, the Wayne Commercial League concluded in somewhat of an anticlimactic fashion.
Going into the week’s action, a chance of a three-way tie appeared imminent. For defending champion AHA Enterprises, though, the possibilities were not limited: this would be the team’s only chance of winning the first half.
Heading into the night, the first and second place teams were Steuhl & Sons and T-Shirt Factory, respectively.
Steuhl & Sons came out fighting, led by a 259 game from setup man Lenny Wydra. T-Shirt Factory was well represented by Aldo Vagnini who erupted for a 624 series — the team high.
At the end of the night however, T-Shirt Factory would have nothing to show for its efforts, as Steuhl & Sons persevered and swept to victory. Steuhl & Sons ended the half with a record of 100 points won and 53 points lost.
Due to T-Shirt Factory’s failure to gain any points, AHA Enterprises leaped into second place with a record of 90 – 63.
By the Numbers
The second half commences this Friday. At the conclusion of Week 17, AHA Enterprises holds the high scratch game by an large margin with a 1,232.
The highest scratch series for a team thus far is held by Tigue Auto with a 3,328 series. Handicap game and series are both held by Loscig’s Garage with a 1,134 game and a 3,274 series.
The high average thus far is held, for the women, by Kathleen Conklin with a 217. Not only is Conklin holding the highest women’s average, she also holds the highest average on her team, followed by her husband, Branden, who currently holds a 214 average.
Gary Eisenhauer is representing the men with a 233 average.
Elsewhere, the leagues are progressing as usual. Anthracite Valley’s Youth Leader Program is slated to commence this Sunday at South Side Bowl in Scranton. Fans are welcome to attend this tournament, which will begin promptly at 10 AM with the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.”
This program hosts some of the area’s finest young men and women from Wallenpaupack Lanes (Hawley) , South Side Bowl (Scranton), Idle Hour Lanes (Scranton) and Shadowbrook Lanes (Tunkhannock).
Back in Hawley, the league bowlers were putting on quite the show, beginning in the junior league. Matthew Hafler (Honesdale) who is presently attending Marywood University rolled a 267 game and a 674 series.
The two highest scores this week were rolled by the adults. Aldo Vagnini rolled a 279 game during Monday evening’s Penn-York League action. Frank Betz would mirror Vagnini’s score the following night during the lake Region IGA League with a 279 game of his own.
For the women, Clare Agnesini of Hawley rolled a 244 game during Sunday night’s Mixed League and Liz Hooper rolled a 203 in Monday afternoon Ladies’ League action.
PBA Update
The PBA is back in action this week. Delaware Water Gap’s Jason Lundquist and the rest of the Lumber Liquidator’s PBA Tour traveled to the motherland of bowling venues: The National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV.
Two tournaments were held this week.
The first was the Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Championship. This unique format allowed the top 16 finishers in exempt qualifying to advance and the top 16 finishers in the Women’s Series to advance. They would be paired up for match-play the next day. Lundquist qualified 31st, missing the cut line.
The second tournament was cleverly titled the “National Bowling Stadium Championship.” Jason would again struggle and finish in 54th place. Norn Duke (Clermont, Fla.) lead the qualifying round with a score of +385. The finals will air Sunday at 1 PM EST.
On Wednesday, following the qualifier to get into the Round of 64, the PBA hosted held a one game roll-off between Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams, Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) and Pete Weber (Saint Ann, Mo.). Williams, Jr. would be victorious, dominating Weber, as he historically does, by the score of 257-199.
This was a marketing plan by the PBA Tour to promote Xtra Frame, a pay-per-view service available through the PBA’s website in which fans can access different components of the tour and view how the player’s attack each week’s challenge.
Up next, Lundquist will travel to Lava Lanes in Medford, OR. for the Bayer Earl Anthony Medford Classic.
