Former Honesdale High School star Morganne Firmstone is off to a stellar start in her senior season.
A senior at Monmouth University, Firmstone led the Hawks to an electrifying field hockey win over Villanova in Week One of the 2010 regular season.
Morganne scored both goals in what became an unforgettable 2-1 overtime victory. It’s the first time in history that Monmouth has defeated Villanova.
“I get goosebumps thinking about it,” Morganne told Hawk Vision Video just moments after banging home the gamewinner on a penalty stroke. “Walking up to the line, I knew what I had to do to finish the game so we could walk away with a win.”
Firmstone’s heroics came only 45 seconds into the first overtime session and gave the Hawks a second straight Opening Day victory.
Next up for Monmouth is a Saturday afternoon home game against Richmond.
Playing the Hero
Monmouth put together a solid 9-12-0 record last fall and advanced all the way to the Northeast Conference championship game.
Firmstone is now a senior midfielder and one of the NEC’s elite scorers.
Monmouth fell behind in the early going, 1-0, but rallied to tie the game thanks to Morganne’s first goal of the season...which came off a penalty corner.
Kayleigh Kalander earned the assist.
The score remained tied until the early moments of overtime when Firmstone ended the contest with a blast just inside the post.
Morganne is the daughter of Jeff & Polly Firmstone, Honesdale. She is majoring in journalism.
