Wargo Flooring sealed the deal on yet another Wayne County Men’s Softball League title this week.
The local lads traveled all the way to Union Dale Tuesday night for Game Two of this best-of-three championship series...and the trip was worth the trek.
Wargo’s jumped all over starting pitcher Jason Castlebury, building a big early advantage en route to a 16-3 massacre.
This closed out a 2-game sweep of the finals. Wargo’s won the opener in Hamlin by a score of 8-6.
“This was a great season,” longtime player/coach Russell ‘Rusty’ Gregory told TWI Sports. “The league is very competitive. We may have won it all again, but the gap is definitely closing.”
Wargo Flooring has now won six consecutive Wayne County Men’s League titles and seven of the last eight. The “Red Soxx” captured their first crown while flying under the banner of Ariel View Inn. The next four came with sponsorship from AM Penn Converting.
Beach Lake Inn won the regular season title, but Wargo Flooring caught fire in the play-offs.
The Hamlin-based ballclub defeated Trio’s in the quarters, then disposed of Gravity to reach the finals.
Big Bats
Ken Rizzi Sr. catapulted Wargo’s into the title tilt with one stellar mound performance after another.
However, it was Brian Bolduc who took the hill in Game Two. The fireballing righty turned in a complete game effort Tuesday, holding a potent Chet’s offense to three runs.
He allowed just three basehits in seven innings and blanked the home team over the course of the final five frames.
Bolduc received more than enough offensive support from his teammates, who chased Castlebury from the game in the top of the fourth inning. Billy Norton came on in relief, but couldn’t silence Wargo’s explosive bats.
Brian Blaum paced the attack with a monster day at the dish. The veteran slugger went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs.
The highlight of Blaum’s outing was a towering 2-run homer.
Kyle Rizzi and Justin Collins also contributed big blows to the Wargo assault.
Rizzi went went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Kyle blasted a pair of homeruns that put the game out of reach.
Collins also played a key role in this victory. The visitors’ clean-up man hammered a 2-run homer and added a sacrifice fly, ending his outing with three RBIs.
Defensively, Wargo’s turn-ed in another outstanding team performance. The champs allowed one run in the first and two more in the second, but then put the clamps on for the rest of the evening.
Wargo’s outscored their hosts by a margin of 11-0 over the last five innings.
“You can’t take anything away from Chet’s...they had a great season,” Gregory said. “I don’t think anyone really expected them to be in the finals.”
