This is just a sneak peek at the story TWI Sports is developing for Saturday's edition.
Bitter rivals Western Wayne and Valley View squared off Thursday night at Scranton's Memorial Stadium for the 2009 District Two Class AAA girls soccer championship game.
The Lady 'Cats and Cougars played to a stalemate through the entire first half and most of the second. Then, like a bolt of lightning, Western Wayne struck.
Freshman phenom Kacie Urian hammered home a goal with six minutes left in regulation...and, it looked like the Lady 'Cats were on the verge of their first-ever D-2 title.
Alas for the big contingent of local fans who made the trip & braved the elements, it simply wasn't meant to be. Valley View scored the equalizer less than two minutes later and eventually won this epic overtime match on penalty kicks.
"I love these girls," Western Wayne's all-time leading scorer Charlcie Brink told TWI Sports just moments after a bittersweet medals ceremony. "I loved being a part of this team. I just wish it didn't all have to end this way. We came so close..."
For a second time in three years, Western Wayne finishes as runner-up in Class AAA.
"We came out ready to play tonight," said Coach John Fahrenbach. "Honestly, I still think we're the better team. We just made one crucial mistake at the worst possible time. But, in a game like this against a team like Valley View...that's all it takes."
