One of the area’s most dedicated and tireless volunteers will be honored next week at a special dinner hosted by Woodloch Pines.

Officials representing Wayne County’s Community Foundation have announced that Bill Bursis is their choice to receive the 2009 Ben Franklin Award.

According to Paul Edwards, this prestigious award is given out to individuals who selflessly dedicate themselves to serving their community.

“Bill Bursis exemplifies the finest qualities of community service,” Paul told TWI Sports. “He is most deserving of this award, which is named in honor of one of our nation’s most famous citizens, Ben Franklin.”

Against the Odds
The Wayne County Community Foundation’s Board of Directors decided to honor Bill Bursis for his work on behalf of spinal cord research.

On October 18, 1990, Bill was injured in an automobile accident. Tragically, he was left paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Since then, Bill has dedicated his life to seeking a cure for his condition.

Starting in ‘95, Bill has been organizing and hosting a benefit golf tournament at Woodloch Springs. Over the course of 14 years, this event has raised a staggering total of $480,000.

That money has been donated to the “Miami Project,” which is a fundraising arm of the University of Miami’s School of Medicine research facility.

If you’d like to honor Bill Bursis by attending the Wayne County Community Foundation dinner, please call 251-9993.

Tickets are still available, as is advertising space in the commemorative booklet, which will be presented to Bill at Thursday’s ceremony.

Bill is the son of Mrs. Ann Bursis. He is a 1977 graduate of Honesdale High School and a “Life Member” of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
