On a cool wet Friday night, the Hornet varsity football team took the field against North Pocono in search of their first win.
The Hornets were 0-8 overall, and 0-4 in the conference. Honesdale was just coming off a tough loss 48-6, to the cross town rival Paupack.
First Half
The Trojans were ready to continue their winning ways against the Hornets.
North Pocono was 7-1 going into the night, and 3-1 in the division. North Pocono is also the only team who has beaten Abington Heights this year. The Trojans were coming off a 42-0 rout of Montrose.
The Red & Black attack was ready to take the field against the Trojans in a Division One Lackawanna Football Conference showdown.
The Hornets didn’t necessarily find what they was looking for but, they may have found something. Honesdale played hard the entire game and gave it their all until the end.
North Pocono jumped ahead quickly going ahead 12-0 with 5:25 left in the first quarter.
After Honesdale threw an interception the Trojans were able to drive down the field again to make the score 19-0.
Before the Hornets could make it to half time the score was 32-0 in favor of the visitors.
Second Half
After a great halftime show by the Trojan band, Honesdale was ready to take the field once again.
North Pocono quickly put more points on the board scoring another TD to go up 39-0.
The Red & Black had seen enough and were ready to get on the scoreboard. Honesdale took possession and prepared to sting. The Hornets moved down the field, and put the ball in the hands of quarterback Andrew Branning.
Branning answered the Hornets’ call for a TD. Andrew rolled out and threw a pass to receiver Pat Maher. He caught the ball, and took it down the field for a 60-yard TD making the score 39-6.
“Our timing was right, the throw was right where it needed to be, I made the grab and took it down field and got in the endzone,” said Pat Maher on his TD reception.
Maher also said he was happy to avoid a shutout and also happy he could help get some points on the board.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would be the last time they would see the endzone for the night. But on the plus side, neither did the Trojans.
Honesdale struggled all game, but never gave up. One Hornet player put it this way: “On the bright side of things, we didn’t give up.”
This quote partially sums up the Honesdale season, playing hard and not giving up no matter what the result.
The Hornets still remain hopeful for their first win, but if it doesn’t happen they still have some good pieces to put together next season.
As mentioned in previous articles, Honesdale has plenty of young players on the freshman quad, JV team, and possibly junior high ready to contribute to next year’s team.
The Red & Black will take the field this Saturday against Abington Heights in their final regular season game.
