Hawley, Pa. -

This week, bowling action was its normal red-hot temperature, thanks in large part to sky-high performances which Wayne County’s Mike Weber has repeatedly been putting on this season.

Big Numbers
Weber rolled a 299 game in last week’s Wayne Major League action. He also rolled a 766 set during the same outing — the center’s high for the week.

Weber has recently joined the PBA and will be competing in regional tournaments next spring. Also, the simplistically-styled right-hander will be competing in the upcoming US Open Qualifier which will be held at Paupack Lanes on Sun. Nov. 15 at 10:00 a.m..

Perhaps even more impressive...and certainly much less anticipated...is the performance which one youngster has been handing in for the past several weeks.

Honesdale’s Kyle Blake entered the 2009-‘10 campaign with the intentions of experiencing a unique atmosphere...which the Tuesday After School League always offers.

This uniqueness quickly proved itself.

Although many high average bowlers consistently gripe when handicap is assessed at a100% difference, Blake found a way to surmount what can often times appear to be insurmountable.

Blake’s theory is simple: bowl better than his opponents. And, that’s exactly what the young stud has done.

This past week, Blake rolled a 748 series — capturing the league high series, at least for the time being.

Some might say that this spurt of success is simply an incredible week...in fact, a fluke.

However, can a fluke allow a bowler to maintain a 220 average through the first five weeks of the season? I’ll allow you, the reader, to draw your own conclusions.

Right or Wrong?
To remove the socialistic parameters which 100% handicap asserts on the league (in fact, taking from each ‘according to their ability’ and redistributing that success ‘to each according to their needs’) a different format has been adapted for this season’s Afterschool League.

Instead of a points system, this year bowlers are competig against everyone else in the league, with their placements being determined by total handicap pinfall.

This allows the better bowl-ers to rise to the top — as Blake has done.  However, this format is also allowing for a 180º turnaround for defending champ, Ashley Cholewka, who finds herself in last place after the fifth week.

The Lake Region IGA Scratch Classic League is in full swing and is looking promising as ever.
Steuhl Enterprises find themselves in first place after the eighth week with Sparnon Wetlands on their tail.

Unlike the other leagues at Paupack, which utilizes the typical house condition, this one competes on a special oil condition created by Kegel.

Whereas last season, Mike Markis captured the high average banner with a 230 average, this season Markis is averaging 207.46 after the fifth week.

Victoria Goncalves is holding down the women’s top spot. She is averaging 187.19 — five pins higher than Clare Agnesini.
