Angelo Carachilo and Kaitlyn DeFazio are prize winners in our 37th annual event

Our 37th Annual Big Buck Contest is now in the books and we are pleased to announce the winners.

All told, more than two dozen local hunters entered this year's contest, which featured antlered deer harvested within the confines of Wayne and Pike Counties.

The 2017 contest began Monday, Nov. 27 and ran through Monday, Dec. 11.

While this year's overall harvest total's won't be available until after the new year, here's a quick glance at some recent numbers.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission reported that, in the state’s 2016-17 seasons, hunters harvested an estimated 333,254 deer.

This represents an increase of about six percent compared to the 2015-16 harvest of 315,813.

Of those, 149,460 were antlered deer. This number marks an increase of about nine percent compared to the previous license year, when an estimated 137,580 bucks were taken. It’s the largest harvest of antlered deer since 2002.

Hunters also harvested an estimated 183,794 antlerless deer last year, a three percent increase compared to the 178,233 antlerless deer taken in 2015-16.

The percentage of older bucks in the harvest remained high, with 56 percent taken being 2.5 years old or older.

In 2015-16, 59 percent of bucks in the harvest were 2.5 years old or older.

The Winners

And so, without further ado, let's meet this year's Big Buck Contest winners.

The 2017 event was divided into two divisions, Youth and Adult, with a different set of prizes for the winner of each.

Kaitlyn DeFazio, who was our very first entrant this year, is the Youth Division champion.

A 14-year-old resident of Beach Lake and student at Honesdale, Kaitlyn bagged a beautiful 8-pointer while hunting in Damascus Twp., Wayne County. She used a Ruger 6mm to make the kill from a distance of about 120 yards.

Kaitlyn's buck boasts a rack with 22” beams and a spread of nearly 21”. Her final score came in at 72.

Angelo Carachilo of Lake Ariel is our Adult Division Winner.

Angelo also arrived on our doorstep on Day One of the season. He harvested a huge 8-pointer while beating the brush not far from his home in Wayne County. Angelo used a 270 Winchester SM to make the shot from a distance of about 70 yards.

His trophy buck sports beams that measure more than 24” and a span of just over 23”. His final score is 81.
