They lined up outside their homes on Monday morning, awaiting the familiar site of a yellow school bus coming down the road.
On Monday, The Wayne Highlands School District opened its doors to students for the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
With the arrival of any new school year, there’s always a great amount of anticipation, expectations and excitement.
It starts the night before as students get nervous thinking about the morning to come: Taking that first bus ride, seeing who might be in your homeroom, going to your first classes, meeting new friends and catching up with old ones and seeing what teachers will be teaching the classes you’ll be taking.
It continues on that first school morning as you try to gobble down a bowl of cereal as it heads into your stomach pit that now resembles a rough wave in an ocean.
And then comes the yellow bus. The ride seems endless.
Oh, those butterflies!
Throughout Wayne County and elsewhere, this scene will be repeated throughout the next week.
It’s a brand new year.
The school year, like any other, is marked with numerous challenges.
It’s a time to dust off the cobwebs of a long, hot summer and get yourself ready to meet the challenges that the curriculum will throw your way.
Every year, students throughout the Commonwealth must make the grade.
They must compete against their counterparts to reach new heights and achieve test scores that will put their schools — and school districts — on the map.
Their teachers will be the ones to get them there.
These educators need to prepare our children to meet the challenges of a world that’s always changing, a world of technology and innovation, a world of wonder and imagination.
This process starts in kindergarten and lasts throughout Grade 12.
Everything our children learn in school will get them equipped to take on life.
Our children also need the skills so they can earn enough income and get competitive jobs — jobs that need to be generated in Wayne County.
There’s no reason for our children to grow up and take their knowledge — knowledge gained from Wayne County’s educators — to other places and other states.
Wayne County’s schools start anew — like fresh coats of paint splashed on their walls during the summer.
Monday, we basked in the glow of a new school year.
Now is the time for Wayne County’s pupils and educators to shine.
