Our View: Waymart gets days in the sun

Waymart doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

This tiny community of 1,400 people sometimes gets lost among the big towns and cities of Honesdale and Carbondale because it’s basically stuck in the middle of them.

They get all the glory and a lot of the news reports.

But this week is different for our Wayne County community.

This week, Waymart certainly placed itself on the map.

The first mark was its hosting of a special day for war veterans at the Ladore Lodge. This event Wednesday offered a special ceremony and picnic and a day of fun, food and remembrance of the services these great people have provided to their country.

The second event takes place over two days, Friday and Saturday.

Waymart holds its annual Waystock, a music festival and street fair that brings crowds from all over Wayne County and the region.

Still, though, this event begins just as the Wayne County Fair gets underway. Yet another sign that Waymart is sometimes the step child that doesn’t get to play with all the other children.

Do yourself a favor and go see Waystock. Check out the 12 bands and more than 40 street vendors providing various goods, services and food.

This is Waystock’s third year, a cool name too considering that the original Woodstock took place a stone’s throw in Bethel, N.Y. It’s a summer favorite for Wayne County and it reflects back to that free spirit of that three-day festival in 1969.

The fun kicks off Friday night with a party featuring two bands rocking the night away. Then, at noon Saturday, Waystock goes into overdrive with 10 bands rocking downtown Waymart.

There’s plenty of activities for the whole family: A Kid Zone, pony rides, music, food and the chance to get to know a great little community a little better.

The events get going with Java from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday and then The Cat and the Fiddle Band wraps up the evening with a performance from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Saturday’s band lineup features The Pharm, Plan B, Riot Control, The Cat and Fiddle Band, Janet Burgan, Chasin’ the Dog, Hyde Park, Red E or Not, Waystock Raffle and the Last Remnants.

Waymart has so much to offer.

The food at the Waymart Hotel is top-notch and our own TWI Sports Editor Kevin Edwards likes to brag that it has the best pizza in the region.

Wrangler’s BBQ Pit also, just behind the hotel, will get those tastebuds fired up. There’s also the nearby Lodge at Keen Lake that offers a banquet facility and year-round lodging.

The Ladore Lodge and conference center is situated in such a scenic setting that you’ll want to stay for a week or at least host all of your important business meetings there.

But don’t sell Waymart short.

The County Fair will be here for a good week. Waymart offers Waystock just for two days. It’s a great event that needs support.
