To the Editor:
I'm writing about a recent event that happened to me. The ticks in this area of Wayne County are out of control. I have been bitten many times and have removed them myself. This last bite was a little different, it became red and swollen. Not wanting to chance Lime Disease I went to the Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room. BIG MISTAKE. I sat for about an hour and when I finally did see the doctor he concluded what I suspected. That it was my clothes that had irritated the bite. This exams took about two minutes. I received a tetanus shot, two band aids, and one antibiotic pill. I was told not to worry.
The real worry came when I received the bill. The doctors fee was $212.00...emergency room fee was $362.00 and with other costs the grand total for a tick bite was $700.00! Not having any insurance this came as a big shock. I think they should have given me an idea of how much it was going to cost. They knew I didn't have any insurance.
I just wanted to warn people in the area.. .don't got to the emergency room for a tick bite. You'll find that the tick has not only taken a bite out you but also your wallet!
