To the Editor:
I have lived in Wayne County for less than three years. However, in that time I've attended a lot of family events with my three children, ages 9, 6 and 4.
I first meet Mark Steelman at the annual bicycle roundup in Honesdale. Since then, I can not remember being at a family event where I didn't see Mark Steelman giving of his time or representing the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. Each time I saw him, he was answering seemingly endless questions from children – and even adults – in a patient, caring and honest manner.
These actions – done years before his running for Sheriff – demonstrated to me a man who cares about the community.
But caring about the community is not the only thing I look at in deciding for whom to cast my vote.
The position of Sheriff brings responsibility for managing a substantial budget and staff, securing our county courts and offices, transporting prisoners, executing warrants and other legal decrees, conducting auctions, issuing conceal weapons and firearms sales permits and a myriad of other tasks.
Only one candidate for Wayne County Sheriff has successful experience executing these specific tasks: Mark Steelman. To me, direct experience counts.
I also place a lot of value on how successful leaders pick their key staff. I don't think the late Sheriff Morelli would have named Mark Steelman Chief Deputy in 2004 if he didn't think Mark had the skill and talent to be Sheriff down the road.
Clearly, Mark has done a great job in handling the department, both during Sheriff Morelli's illness and as the interim chief after his death.
That is why I am voting for Mark Steelman for Wayne County Sheriff on Nov. 3.
