To the Editor:
Imagine my surprise when I read the Mastodon article in your weekend paper.  My late brother-in-law Paul Strausser discovered the skeleton while he was excavating a peat moss bog in Marshalls Creek in 1968.
We all thought he was pulling our leg when he told us about his find.  Well the joke was on us!
Upon seeing, the “stone” was no stone, but in fact, a large bone, Paul contacted the owner of the bog who in turn contacted an archeologist.  The peat moss operation was closed for quite some time during the retrieval of the bones.
The young people in our family were thrilled to see Paul’s name on the plaque adjacent to the Mastodon when they visited the museum.  I hope after disassembly and reassembly his name will be on a plaque as the person who found it.
I thought this was an interesting sideline to the article and I hope enough virtual bones will be sold for the fundraiser and the re-creation of the Marshalls Creek mastodon.
Thank you,
