HONESDALE -

To the Editor:
Your June 21st edition carried the excellent article about the Boy Scouts attributed to The Gazette of Colorado Springs, Colorado. That article excellently touted the valor and demeanor by the survivor Scouts when the deadly tornado hit their Iowa camp, killing four young Scouts. The article also went on to cite how our Boy Scouts of America has turned out so many of our best and great leaders of both industry and our military. The immediate actions taken by those surviving Scouts in Iowa served to point out that the Scouting leadership and training is still serving both the Scouts, their organization and our nation well.
Too bad the same cannot be said for the American? Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) which has chosen to forget what it originally was founded for and has attacked the BSA both in courts and in print as being an unfit organization simply due to the Scouting creed which prohibits scouting leadership to homosexually oriented people.
Note, the creed apparently does not place the same prohibition on rank & file scouts. However, the ACLU which should both be required to take two years of Scout training before being allowed to practice ANY kind of law and should be required to remove the word AMERICAN from its title, has caused the national scouting organization to be evicted from some of its offices in places like New York City and Philadelphia, the once home of American freedoms simply because the Boy Scouts of AMERICA has refused to remove the prohibition of homosexuals from being part of the Scout's leadership.
I think we can only wonder as to which of these two organizations, the Boy Scouts or the ACLU should be being scrutinized in our courts. Meanwhile, we're thankful for our Boy Scouts of America and also believe that the ACLU should be required to remove the word AMERICAN from its title since it definitely is not that any more!
