Compared to what the weatherman predicted the holiday weekend was not too devastating at all. It seems Northern Wayne has been spared a lot of really nasty gifts from Mother Nature but she certainly has been very generous in dispensing flash floods, forest fires and destructive winds all across the country. We have been fortunate indeed so far this summer. Let's hope it continues.
The Fourth of July was celebrated extensively throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and anyone who wanted to enjoy the day had a myriad of activities in which to partake. Almost every county featured fireworks for all to enjoy. I can understand backyard celebrants wanting to set off their own sparklers and colorful fireworks but the racket eminating from my local neck of the woods made me think "there goes the neighborhood."...just like the Indiansdid when Columbus breezed into town. Why people must disturb the whole countryside with earth shattering "bombs" is beyond me. Do they ever consider that there may be elderly sick people around or babies sleeping or even horses that get spooked over noises they never heard before? Numerous "bombings"occurred after 10 p.m. which I think is past the legal hour for noise making. It reflects an inconsiderate mindset. Would they dare do this back home? Hopefully this is not going to persist throughout the summer.
Heads up driving is crucial on the back roads but several times youngsters on all terrain vehicles missed being hit by inches. Of course they were just joy riding but Jericho Road is no place to speed around recklessly. Newcomers have to be reminded that they must share the countryside with people who have been taxpayers for generations and have a more sedate life style.
Thank you, Mimi Steffen for sharing your expertise about ticks. Of all the people who contacted me, she had the most informative suggestions. She lives in Honesdale and regrets she can't help Diego (the young man anxious to learn English). Honesdale is not exactly around the corner from Hancock but I appreciate her desire to help. Wayne County is at the head of the class when it comes to volunteers....in local churches, at the library, in the hospital, at all the local fire and ambulance stations and in schools. If you have a few hours try volunteering, you will be doing a good deed. You'll be proud of yourself and also appreciated beyond words. For new-comers it's an easy and valued way to meet your neighbors.- Rose Funke
