Lake Como Happenings

Everywhere I looked the past few weeks was "hustle and bustle"...not very conducive to sitting back and relaxing. The Northern Wayne Library, through the curtesy of the Hess Corp. hired Hanstine Excavating to remedy the problem of a possibly permanently damaged foundation by installing a drainage system. There was much activity around the building since 15 to 20 Hess people scurried about to help improve the digging site.
The Funke household was no haven of peace and quiet either. We decided to install a new roof on our back extension (the one Joe took a nose dive from a few years ago and managed to survive even though lesser accidents have led to tragedy...e.g., Christopher Reeves) and who did we call but the two Mikes...Mike Mc Elroy and Mike Smith who run the S & M Roofing Company. We were so pleased with the work they did last year on the main roof that it didn’t take much thinking about who to hire. Again we were more than pleased with the results and had the satisfaction of engaging these two local fellows from Deposit to do the work.
But what about my ladies of the week? I’d like you to meet the new library staff but Marian was too busy to be interviewed so I got her permission to extract all the informaton I need from the Library Notes. I realize that many of you are already familiar with the write up the new staff has received in the Notes but for the benefit of those who are not regular library attendees I especially summarize this column for you ( you really should go to the library often...you’d be surprised how much there is to learn in those hallowed halls.)
Moving to Pennsylvania from Oklahoma in 2005, Marian Curtis resides in Pleasant Mount, where she and her husband, Charles M. Curtis, own and operate Brookstead Dairy Farm. Marian holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master’s of Education Degree in Counseling. She worked for two years in a university library and taught high school for twelve years. Marian brings a rich background of teaching, counseling and library science to her new Library Directors position. Mother of three, all of whom are either in the military or married into the military, Marian is looking forward to spending time with her first grandchild, to be born in South Korea this summer. (Carly Jenkins arrived as expected and Grandma Marian visited her in September) Accordingly, she has enjoyed joining the team of volunteers and staff at Northern Wayne Community Library. Marian says, "It is my goal to honor the rich heritage of NWCL, while addressing the ongoing needs of our patrons and of our community."
Marie Sullivan, our library assistant, was born in San Antonio, Texas, where her father was stationed at Lakeland Air Force Base. She grew up in Beach Lake, attended Honesdale High School, and received a degree in English, with minors in Philosophy and Japanese as well as a Master’s Degree of Library and Information Science. (Not in the Notes:) I must congratulate Marie for choosing such a difficult language as Japanese. Any Asian language is a challange to the grey matter of caucasian minds. I have been studying Chinese for two years now and can barely put a sentence together. Marie looks forward to making friends and working with the community.
Megan Stanton, daughter of Judie and Bruce Stanton, grew up in Shehawkin, attended Preston School and graduated from Honesdale High School. Currently she is a student at Bloomsburg University where she is a dual major in English and English Education with a minor in Educational Technology. Her responsibilities at the library include mentoring our young patrons, assisting and facilitating programs throughout the summer in addition to assisting in general library duties."
Each year I feel compelled to voice my sentiments on Halloween....which means the Eve of ALL Hallows ...All Saints Day. I feel it is a desecration to what some people hold sacred... the Saints. Even if you don’t believe in them, respect those who do. To let children run around the neighborhood threatening...TRICK OR TREAT ...puts them in the driver’s seat thus we shouldn’t be surprised if kids resent parental supervision, teacher supervision, or being told what to do. We thereby alter our childrens’ perception of their position, or in other words give them an overrated opinion of their role in society just for a few pieces of candy.
