It was truly heart warming to see the crowd that attended the recent Breast Cancer seminar at Preston School. We were honored by the presence of Fred Jackson, Director of F.Q.H.C. (Federally Qualified Health Centers), Doctor Robert Dohner, Medical Director, also Public Relations Director, Lisa Champeau, Mary Wetherall, Operations Director of Community Health Centers, in addition to Julie Pacheco, Public Relations Specialist of Wayne Memorial Hospital and Jackie Dohner, Volunteer who worked earnestly to make this meeting a success.
Dr. Dohner made an interesting presentation with slides , describing the pathway cancer takes and its consequences. A question period followed but the doctor made everything so clear, there were not so many questions. Next came Melissa Rickard, a breast cancer survivor. Needless to say the audience latched on to her every word. Then Barbara Griges Pratt, a dietitian outlined my mother's old adage, "You are what you eat." At the end of her lecture speaking about food, I got rather hungry and Brenda Kane who was seated next to me kindly helped me quell my appetite by assisting me to the buffet table. What delicious food ! baked pasta, veggie platters, fruit and dips. Yummy ! So ended the evening...if you missed it, its your misfortune. Maybe we'll see you next time around.
Speaking of things medical, who could ever forget Peggy Sarno? She was the receptionist for Dr. Matlaga until he moved on to Wayne Memorial and then she manned the desk for Dr. Dohner until her health forced her to quit. She certainly lit up the office with her friendliness and good humor. In fact you felt half cured even before you saw the doctor. She did graduate 3rd in her class which was no small feat and she's been excelling ever since. She and James raised three outstanding children...James, Tina and Tracy who have presented her with five grandchildren. David Thibaut age 20 who is serving our country in the Navy.Stacey Ann Sarno (19) in her second year of college...Melissa Shymko from Brick, N.Y. who insists on having her exact age recorded (12 3/4) and the twins 2 1/2 Kaedon and Quinten Rieply.
Peggy is a busy lady these days. She loves her golden retrievers, Opie and Yukon, and she also loves to sew, knit, and embroider. She is nobly serving the community by her volunteer work at Wayne Memorial Hospital and she is dedicated to her job. She feels she has to give back to the community all she has gotten since she has moved up to God's country. She is also President of Chapter 2409 of A.A.R.P. Being president of anything these days certainly keeps you hopping. She wishes her health was better so that she and James could travel more. Hang in there, Peggy we know you'll be "on the road" again.
Don't forget the delicious Harvest Dinner at the Lake Como Methodist Church on May 17th. It's sure to whet your appetite and you won't have to bother doing the dishes. It's an affair where you can meet old friends and make new ones. Alice Sampson tells me that this dinner is sponsored by the Trustees of the Church...donation Adults: $8 children under 12 $4.
