WAYMART, Pa. -

Why is the Farview site so historical?
(Continued from last week)
The D&H finished the building of the Gravity in less than two years and as businessmen quickly realized the appeal that Far View Mountain held for the miners, canalers and residents who settled  the area. * The D&H built passenger cars, closed and open, (see Car 43 at Waymart Depot Museum) and at first had excursion rides. In 1877 they established regular scheduled railroad trips between Carbondale and Honesdale stopping at the Amusement Park. * The D&H Canal Company formed the Farview Amusement Company where thousands of people visited for picnics, ball games, hikes, penny games and general amusement.
The Farview Amusement Company built a station and over 20 buildings, numerous picnic tables, wooden boardwalks, ball fields and two wooden towers for visitors to climb so they could enjoy the outstanding vista toward the east and the Upper Delaware Valley.
The Brick House stands on this property. * The towers were located in two different areas. The first wooden tower was near the Gravity Tracks and located on the present day access road to Adams Cable TV Sending & Receiving Signal Tower. The second wooden tower was on the present land of Lamar & Nancy Esbenshade between their home and God's Mountain Lodge. This tower was near the Ball Field.
To be continued next week.
The Waymart Ambulance Corp. will hold their monthly meeting on Monday, October 19th, 7 p.m., at their garage.
Thought for this week: In the days when a woodshed stood behind the American home, a great deal of what passes as juvenile delinquency was settled out of court.
The 8th Annual Craft Fair will be held at the Western Wayne Middle School this Saturday, October 17th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. , to Benefit the Western Wayne Marching Band and Color Guard.
The Admission is $3.00 and free for Kids 10 and younger. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a variety of Basket Chances, Raffle Prizes, A Bake Sale, A Grand Prize Drawing, and a Kid's Corner Crafters. There will be more than 90 Vendors which will be a fun and interesting day. This event is being sponsored by the Western Wayne Band Parents Association.
Handy hints: Nifty Notes for kids.
* To get your kids to brush their teeth for the recommended 3-minute minimum, place a 3-minute egg timer in the bathroom. Turn it over and get them to brush until the sand runs out.
* Traveling...Hang a shoe bag over the backseat of the car and store all the children's toys.
* Use small paper plates to slip their popsicle and ice cream sticks through to avoid messy drips.
* To avoid constant washroom visits when on a long drive, give the kids a cup of crushed ice instead of a soft drink. It will last a lot longer and will be less messy.
* To avoid the crush when exiting from a crowded concert or sports event with your children, always bear to the left. Most people tend to gravitate naturally to the right. You'll be going in the opposite direction to most of the crowd.

This week’s joke:
Unable to attend his father's funeral, a son who lived far away called his brother and said: "Do something nice for Dad and send me the bill."
A few weeks later, he received a bill for two hundred dollars which he duly paid. Then the next month he got another bill for two hundred dollars, which he again paid, thinking it was some unforeseen expensive. But when the bills for two hundred dollars kept on arriving each month, he phoned his brother to find out what was going on.
"Well," said the other brother, "you said to do something nice for Dad. So I rented him a tuxedo."
Keep smiling.
The Waymart Lions Club will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 20th.
My husband and I went to the 155th Bloomsburg Fair. It was nice to try some food from the many vendors that was there.
The cost was $5 for parking and $5 a person to enter the fair. There were many souvenirs to buy, a lot of farm animals to look at, many displays of flowers, and lots of produce. The biggest pumpkin was 1105 pounds and second place 968 pounds. The biggest squash, 689 pounds and 265 pounds. The largest watermelon was 51 pounds. I heard that 75,000 people went to the fair on the last day (one day only). It must have been really crowded.
This week’s question:
In modern day camel racing in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, what is used to keep jockeys on their mounts?
Answer: Velcro. It has replaced rope.
The Western Wayne Booster Club will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 21st, 7 p.m., in the Western Wayne High School cafeteria.
Sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Mary Catherine "Kay" Bullock,Waymart, who passed away on Friday, October 2nd.
A regular golfer approached the club professional for advice. "You've seen me play. What do you think I'm doing wrong?"
The pro said: "Your main problem is that you stand too close to the ball--after you've hit it."
Have a nice week.
