Want to learn about the scribal arts of the Middle Ages? You can at the Canton of Riverouge’s Medieval Studies in Hawley.
The Canton of Riverouge, a group dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe, will be holding Medieval Studies during its regular meeting Jan. 18 at 3:00 pm in the Hawley Borough Building. In January, the group will focus on the scribal arts with members researching and discussing the various aspects of the arts from styles of writing to the illuminations or drawings that often accompanied written items.. Anyone interested in learning more about life in pre-17th-century Europe is welcome to attend.
Medieval Studies is a monthly held during the Canton regular meetings. In February, the Canton will be exploring Courtly Love and Marriage.
The Canton will also be discussing the Hawley Medieval Movie night demonstration set for Saturday, Sept. 5 in Bingham Park. Members of the Canton and the Barony of the Endless Hills will be dressed in period costumes and present displays, games and crafts from life in Medieval times, including warriors fighting in armor. After sunset, everyone can stay to watch a free Medieval themed movie.
Anyone wishing to volunteer to help can attend to learn more about this day-long event. The Medieval Movie Night is co-sponsored by the Wayne County Drug Task Force and the Hawley Movies in the Park Committee.
The Canton of Riverouge and the Barony of the Endless Hills are a part of the Society for Creative Anachronism, an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more.
