Fire destroyed Paul’s Garage in Waymart early Tuesday morning.
First on scene, Waymart Fire Chief Tom Derrick says the garage was fully involved when he arrived around 2 a.m., but hadn’t yet spread to the office area. Based on how hot things were burning, the Chief said he knew they weren’t going to be able to save the building.
A dozen fire companies responded from Wayne, Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties, along with Waymart Volunteer Ambulance. The blaze was called in by a neighbor, awakened in the early morning hours by what sounded like an explosion in the garage.
The Chief says they battled the blaze for about two-and-a-half hours, before finally bringing it under control. “It’s a metal building and held a lot of heat,” he said via phone Tuesday morning. The building was a total loss along with several cars inside.
Derrick says a state police Fire Marshal was called to the scene to try and determine the cause of the consuming blaze.
