Wayne County Farmers’ Market launches its 2008 summer season on Saturday, May 24 of Memorial Day weekend, trackside behind the Wayne County Visitors Center, Commercial Street, Honesdale, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Vendors offer a variety of home grown and homemade items including locally raised produce – vegetables, fruit and herbs, bedding plants and shrubs, meat and poultry, eggs and cheese, bread and baked goods, fudge and ice cream. Hand-crafted items including knit and crocheted clothing, rag rugs, jewelry, and more are also sold.
The market will be open rain or shine every Saturday through October.
“Supporting our local farmers is vitally important if Wayne County is going to sustain our rural and small town way of life,” farmers’ market manager Lisa Salak reported. “In addition, our many small businesses that create homemade and handmade products lend a real country flavor to our weekly market.”
“We appreciate our regular customers who come back year after year, and we hope to see lots of new faces this year, too,” she continued. “Like our customers, we as vendors also look forward to starting our summer Saturday routine at the farmers’ market.”
New vendors this year include Chris Lantzsch of Lantzsch Farms selling eggs, beef, poultry, and sweet corn in season, and Hal and Barbara Reitzig of Red Maple Farm in Waymart selling alpaca fleece and yarn as well as finished alpaca products like gloves, hats, scarves, and shawls.
Returning after last year’s absence Brian Fox of Salem Mountain Natural Vegetables offering vegetables without chemicals, as well as rhubarb, asparagus, and blueberries, also Roger Hill of Treeline Gardens selling vegetable bedding plants, heirloom tomatoes, salad greens, garlic, root vegetables, apples and cider.
Two cheesemakers are among the many vendors returning this year are—Jay and Emily Montgomery of Calikin’s Creamery and Richard and Carol Barrett of Fallsdale Farm.
Richard Tregidgo of North Slope Farm in Mount Pleasant returns with his organic shrubs trees and flowers.
Vegetable farmers this season include Jim Yatsonsky of Yatsonsky’s Farm, Matt Schaffer of Matt’s Real Farm Market in Hamlin, Hawley’s Roberta Holcomb of Victory Hill Farms, Susan Carroll of The Garden, and Jay Vail of Vailland Farm on Cochecton Turnpike.
Other vendors include Beach Lake Bread, Mrs. Salak’s Breads and Pies, Kacer’s Kielbossa, Tony Robertiello, Lynita’s Stitchery, Some Enchanted Earrings, Polygon Products, Wahoo Enterprises, LLC, and Waterpure, Inc.
