A couple serving the Whites Crossing Volunteer Hose Company were arrested Tuesday on charges they misappropriated funds from the fire company, according to a complaint filed with the Lackawanna District Attorney's Office.
Fire Chief Timothy McDonald, 41, and his wife, Beverly, 30, both of 8 Reservoir St., Simpson, voluntarily turned themselves in Tuesday. They were arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Sean McGraw after their arrests by Lackawanna County detectives. Both are free after posting $5,000 bail.
Beverly is the hose company's treasurer, according to arrest papers. She faces an additional charge of forging a signature on fire company checks.
A trustee of the company prompted the the investigation in June after he came to the district attorney's office with information about allegedly missing funds.
Tim and Beverly are employed at The Carbondale News, which is a sister publication of The Wayne Independent. Both are owned by GateHouse Media.
"Both Tim and Beverly are employed by the Carbondale News," said Steve Fountain, who is publisher of both papers. "Beyond that, I cannot comment on personnel issues. As with any employee of our family of newspapers and Web sites, they will receive the same coverage of their case as anyone else would."
