A small experimental plane crashed at a private airstrip in Clinton Township on Sunday.
The pilot was coming in for a landing but fell just short, smacking a hillside that the runway sits upon, said Browndale Fire Chief Ronald Richards, whose department responded to the incident at 5:47 p.m.
Emergency responders secured the plane to prevent it from sliding down the hill, which stood about 60-feet above a ravine, said Richards.
“It was hanging on the hillside,” he said.
The crashed occurred near Stone Bridge Lane and White Oak Pond, off Route 170. They also had to pull the pilot out of the plane, a single-seat, single-propellor, Challenger II.
The pilot, James Parker, of Clinton Township, sustained moderate injuries, according to press reports.
“He was still in the wreckage - conscious, seat belt on, ” said Richards.
Waymart Volunteer Ambulance treated him on scene. He was then transported to Community Medical Center in Scranton.
An attempt to contact the airstrip owner was not successful by press time.
The Federal Aviation Administration conducted an investigation of the crash on Monday, as required for these matters.
It was ruled accidental, according to an FAA preliminary report provided to The Wayne Independent on Tuesday. The FAA deemed the plane destroyed.
Prompton Fire and Rescue Unit and Waymart Fire Co. also responded to the incident.
