Teenagers usually don’t look to their peers as role models, but Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Jake Martin gives them a reason to do so.
Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Martin, Carbondale, was given the Billy Mitchell Award by the Wayne Composite Squadron 201 of the Civilian Air Patrol (CAP) Wednesday night at St. Thomas More Church community room in Lake Ariel.
The Billy Mitchell award is given to cadets that show great leadership skills, character and a knowledge of aviation. Upon receiving the award, the cadet is promoted to “Cadet 2nd Lieutenant,” and is eligible for the E-3 (Airman First Class) rank if they choose to join the Air Force. The cadet is also eligible for advanced credit in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC). The award is named after Gen. Billy Mitchell, an aviation pioneer who advocated for an air force separate from the other branches of the military.
“I have a family history with the Air Force,” said Jake. His father was a 3-bar Air Force sergeant, his uncle is the commander of the Air Force’s 11th Operations group, and his grandfather was a tail-gunner in the Army Air Corp in World War II. “I’ve had an interest in the Air Force Academy for sometime now,” he said.
The Civilian Air Patrol is a group of men and women, young and old, who volunteer as “flying minutemen” who perform nationwide emergency services, teach aerospace education, and run a nationwide cadet program.
Not only is Jake a Cadet 2nd Lieutenant in the CAP, he is also a part of the Boy Scouts National Honor Society and is close to attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He is on the Scranton Prep swim and track teams, and is also in speech and debate. He is a member of the Junior Statesmen of America and the Future Business Leaders of America. Jake plans on attending the United States Air Force Academy after graduation.
