Joining the military is a choice that redirects the trajectory of a person’s life. Three seniors at Western Wayne High School have chose to take that trajectory and each join the military. These three heroes-in-training are Garrett Enslin, Tyler McKinney and Shannon Myers.

Enslin, the son of Gary and Kathleen Enslin, has chosen to enlist in the Navy. He wanted “to have an impact on the world” and felt the Navy was the best way for him to do so. Enslin will train to be a Nuclear Submarine Helmsman. Another aspect of the Navy that was a deciding factor for Enslin was the fact that “the Navy has an honor concept, not a code.” He further explained by saying that the honor concept “is an all encompassing concept” and not just a rule.

Enslin has participated in many activities during his education at Western Wayne. These activities include being captain of the wrestling and scholastic teams, a three-year member of the National Honor Society, a four-year participant in FBLA and being a bagpiper for the Scranton Black Diamonds Drum Corp. He was inspired to play the bagpipes “after seeing Braveheart” and continues to enjoying playing in his spare time.

McKinney, the daughter of Roger and Lisa McKinney, is currently in the Army. She will stay in the Army and will attend West Point Military Academy to begin training to become a helicopter pilot. “I felt West Point was the best fit for me,” she said of her decision.

McKinney has been filling her free time with many different extracurricular activities: Softball-captain, indoor and outdoor track, volleyball, travel softball for the North East All-Stars, coaches choice award for softball, All-Region softball and was awarded the Army Achievement Medal. In her spare time, McKinney says she loves to travel and play softball.

Myers, the daughter of Greg and Misuk Myers, has been accepted into both the Coast Guard and the Air Force Academy. “I haven’t made my decision yet,” Myers said, adding that she “is leaning toward the Coast Guard.” Myers is open to traveling where ever she is needed by whichever organization she does choose.

Myers has also rounded out her education with various extracurricular activities which include being the WVIA Artist of the Week, being a nominee for the American Visions Award, FBLA Regional Secretary for two years, President of the National Honor Society and is learning to play the ukulele. She also participates in gymnastics. As for the ukulele, Myers “has only been playing for a couple months” and enjoys learning the instrument.

Enslin, McKinney and Myers say that those interested in joining the military “shouldn’t give up” when it becomes difficult. Enslin says “it’s really competitive” and takes “a lot of hard work.” Enslin and Myers will report to their respective assignments in late June; McKinney is currently awaiting orders.
