HONESDALE -

A request was turned down to accept appliance with freon at the County Recycling Center, to try and curb dumping off road sides.
Wayne County Commissioners, Tuesday, stated that they do not wish to compete with private enterprise, noting there are several local companies that remove freon. Commissioner Wendell Kay said that the freon needs to be removed before the appliance is dropped off at the County Recycling Center.
The Berlin Township Supervisors made the request in a letter. Their road master, Supervisor Tony Franklin, suggested at the July 15th meeting that people were duping appliances off their township roads after finding they could not leave them at the Recycling Center with freon. The Center is in Berlin Township, off Route 652.
Freon is used as a refrigerant on refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumdifiers. A list of several local companies that may be contacted to remove freon is provided by the Wayne County Solid Waste Department, Director Randy S. Heller. Commissioner Tony Herzog said there may be other companies. Chairman Brian Smith added that they may contact the Recycling Center to update the list; call 253-9727.
Companies on the current list include Lakeside Electric, Hawley; Gerald Coleman, Honesdale; Kinzinger HVAC, Inc., Bethany; Michael Dunn Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Beach Lake; Roney’s, Preston Park; Gershey Appliance Service, Inc., Lake Ariel; Ron Lenz Heating & A/C, Inc., Beach Lake; and Tuyela Refrigeration, Honesdale.

• Bill  Woodruff, representing the Pleasant Mount Community Center Board, noted that their request for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for a stove was nixed by the state. The letter gave no reason why and he wanted to know if they could apply again or if stoves did not apply. The Center was earlier turned down for an activities program request but money for a security alarm was approved. Chairman Smith said they would ask for more specific eligibility guidelines. The Commissioners give recommendation for approval for CDBG requests annually, which are forwarded to the state.
• Approval was given for Berlin Township to erect a gate on county land, on a driveway that leads to the Township garage. The gate will not interfere with access to the county-owned historic Bethel School, nearby, or the County Farm facilities.
• Notification was given for a grant approval, covering $81,381 in salary reimbursement for the Wayne County Probation Department. This apples to the Juvenile Court Justice Commission program for July 1, 2008- June 30, 2009.
• Notice was received for a permit application to restore the Lower Twin Lakes Dam to its normal level, at Camp Wayne for Girls in Buckingham Township.
The Wayne County Commissioners meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Courthouse. The Tuesday, August 5th meeting has been canceled.
